Shortages of potable water have reached a critical, if not crisis level in much of the world. Nearly 25% of the world’s people now face extremely high levels of water stress. Water restrictions are becoming more common, and the costs of treating wastewater are high. In the United States, processing wastewater into potable water accounts for 3-4% of the total energy used in the entire country. Water conservation is now mandated in many cities and countries throughout the US and the world.
In our Cape Hatteras, NC rental properties, we are very proud to save water and energy wherever and whenever possible. We recently replaced our vintage 1980s 7 gallons per flush (gpf) toilets with two Niagara Conservation Stealth energy-efficient toilets that use only .8 gpf. Based on common usage, this translates into an estimated yearly savings of 22,630 gallons of water, more water than a standard 16’ x 36’ pool. If all the inefficient old toilets in the US were replaced with efficient, water-saving toilets, it could save 520 billion gallons of precious water every year.
