Vacationing is fundamentally about rejuvenating ourselves, and our mission is to bring this goal into its fullest experience. Our work is to offer an environment and products that are healthier for humans, and yet aid in helping create a sustainable Outer Banks. What we offer is backed by over sixteen years of research into human health and habitat.

Our units reflect this work the best they can, and are always being improved. We have installed some of the most advanced fans and climate control technology to improve indoor air quality and comfort. We offer soaps, cleaning products, detergents, and paper products that are perhaps the healthiest on the market. We have taken numerous energy and water efficiency measures that will improve our guests’ stay.

Induction, Induction, What’s Your Function

This spring we replaced our traditional electric ranges with an upgrade new to most people: Induction cooking. Our electric ranges were great workhorses, but this early twentieth century technology has seen its day as safer and more efficient induction cooktops come onto the market. What is induction cooking? Traditional electric cooktops work by the […]

An Aquifer in the Outer Banks of North Carolina

Energy versus Water

Currently, we are beginning a global transition to highly energy efficient appliances, but, as with many commodities, we are not at the “promised land” yet. In the United States, we often need to buy products that are less energy efficient than what can be found in Europe, and this places us in a quandary. We […]

Coronavirus molecules floating in solution

Dealing with COVID-19

This week, The New York Times published an article entitled “How the Coronavirus Compares with 100 Years of Deadly Events.”[1] It juxtaposed the rate of deaths from COVID-19 with the death rates from other major historical events, such as disasters and pandemics. In the cities that have suffered the highest number of deaths from COVID-19, […]

The Miracle of Water

Shortages of potable water have reached a critical, if not crisis level in much of the world. Nearly 25% of the world’s people now face extremely high levels of water stress. Water restrictions are becoming more common, and the costs of treating wastewater are high. In the United States, processing wastewater into potable water accounts […]

Windsurfers racing across the ocean

Speedsters Saving Carbon

Congratulations to the 241 competitors who raced in the windsurfing OBX-Wind long distance race on April 15th. Often going faster than the wind, these racers could hit top speeds close to that of a jet ski. The difference is that over the two hours of racing, the competitors saved perhaps more than 964 gallons of […]

Pile of old incandescent light bulbs

Let There Be (Better) Light

We just transitioned from 1990’s lighting to 2018, swapping 23 incandescent bulbs for Ecosmart LEDs. First, it was surprising how much better the lighting was; LEDs have come a long way. But, just how much energy will we save? The old incandescent bulbs used over 1563 kW of electricity per year, while the new bulbs […]

Porcelain cup of steaming black coffee surrounded by roasted coffee beans

What’s in Your Coffee?

We recently chose coffeemakers for use in our ecotourism spaces. For many of us, the first thing we do in the morning is switch on the coffeemaker and wait for those first restorative sips of caffeine, so it was an important choice. We want our coffee quickly, and we want it to taste good. But […]

As part of our efforts to create a path towards a sustainable future, we have spent many hours researching products that are good both for the environment and for us. We have also installed some of the most advanced fans and climate control technology, as well as energy-saving devices. Below are some of the brands we use if you are interested in more information.

And part of a sustainable future is to pay a living wage and promote the well-being of all who work or consult with us. We take this mission very seriously.

Long pier stretching into the ocean on the Outer Banks, North Carolina

The properties we have selected allow us to blend community and activity, as this part of Avon has developed into a hub for beachgoers, water sports, and fishing enthusiasts. Our rentals strike a great balance by being close to everything that makes a vacation worthwhile with potentially no need to drive.

We hope that while sitting on the balcony with a cold drink watching sunsets and sailors, you will appreciate our efforts. This is an evolving project, and we work hard at constantly offering new developments that point us towards vacationing sustainably.
